2021 in Review: Countries in Europe and Central Asia make bolder climate action pledges
Across Europe and Central Asia, the climate crisis is already putting pressure on ecosystems and triggering severe weather events.
Summer heatwaves are projected to last longer and be more frequent. The region is also expected to experience more heavy rainfall, dry spells, and drought.
Many countries in the region remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels, despite their potential for renewable energy. More must be done to transition to low-carbon economies, reduce emissions, and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Through the Climate Promise, UNDP is supporting 17 countries across the region to rise to the challenge, through their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Many have submitted more ambitious and robust NDCs with clearer action plans, financing strategies, and inclusive implementation road maps. Here are some of the highlights.
